International student outdoor experience - Camp Tirohanga

By Johann Breust (Germany)Wednesday November 20, 2013

While the senior students wrote their practice exams, the international students went on a trip to Tirohanga Camp, near Mosgiel. After we left school, we first went to Sandfly Beach, a beach on the Otago Peninsula. We tried sand surfing and saw the sea lions. In the afternoon we arrived at Tirohonga.

On Wednesday a man came and did some team games with us. Then we went to an outdoor area where we did archery, climbing and shooting with rifles. But the ‘highlight‘ of the day was when Judith got stuck in the middle of the flying fox at about 20 metres above the river.

In the evening Duncan disappeared and we had to look for him. We were in two teams and the first team to find him had to look after him, while the other team got the first aid equipment. When we found him he was very upset, because he had lost his dog. Then he collapsed and we had to use our first aid skills, which we had learned before. When the others arrived with the stuff, we had to carry him all the way back to the house.

The next morning we cleaned the rooms and went to the Pineapple Track. When we got back to school everybody was tired and looking forward to their own beds.
